This is the group description posted on our Facebook group (additional groups are listed at the end):
INTRODUCTION: Welcome! This group provides a social side to the “Adventists for Social Action” blog – https://advactivism.wordpress.com/. We are Adventists attempting to embody God’s love for the world through advocacy, volunteerism and other humanitarian adventures. Here we share our stories and thoughts regarding spiritually-motivated social action.
CONTENT: Group members are encouraged to post questions, news stories, pithy quotes, and bits of humor… as long as the content is about faith-based social and environmental ethics/action. We especially focus on Adventist/Christian perspectives on peace and justice issues, sometimes labeled human rights, social justice, or biblical social responsibility. For more details, see the description posted on the blog – https://advactivism.wordpress.com/about/.
Please respect the focus of this group. Posts that do not fit these parameters will be deleted. People who repeatedly submit off-topic posts will be removed from the group. There are many other groups for discussing general theology, partisan politics, and Adventist life. Here we focus on thinking clearly and acting rightly in relation to social ethics and social action within the context of our faith commitments.
POLITICS: Most of the topics we discuss inherently possess political dimensions—gun violence, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, poverty, conservation, etc. In this group, we strive to focus on the *issues* rather than the political parties that align (today) with various policies.
RESPECT: Rude comments will be deleted, giving you the opportunity to retype them more kindly. We don’t have to agree, but we also don’t need to denigrate each other. We should seek unity in diversity.
Avoid name-calling & personal accusations. Filled with God’s love by the Holy Spirit, we can demonstrate a higher level of communication. Also, let us avoid talking disrespectfully about gender, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race/ethnicity, language, nationality or other personal characteristics. There’s room for critique, but no need for disrespect.
May we remember that there is at least one thing more important than being right – being loving. “If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing” (1 Cor 13:2). So let us speak truth as we understand it in love (Eph 4:15). And love is not rude (1 Cor 13:5).
We address extremely volatile issues. People are invited to engage these loaded conversations; however, the more controversial the topic, the more care should be used to communicate in respectful & open language; constructive conversation requires it. Participants are encouraged to use language that invites conversation and dialogue rather than pontification or counter-attack. We all have been wrong; we all have more to learn. Covey: Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
